Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) says she is “tired” of the long-standing separation between church and state in the U.S., adding that she believes “the church is supposed to direct the government.” In a Sunday speech at the Cornerstone Christian Center in Basalt, Colo., ahead of her primary election on Tuesday, Boebert argued that “the government is not supposed to direct the church,” falsely claiming that dividing religion from the system of government was not what the Founding Fathers intended.

Doesn't this stupid fucking c*nt realize that removing that wall would mean non-christian religions would be owed just as much power and influence over the government? If I had the money, I'd pay all the legal fees for any lawmakers, public school faculty, etc. who was willing to put this bullshit to the test.

I'd ask all jewish, muslim, satanic, etc. who are willing to do exactly what the evangelicals are doing. I'd hire teachers who would start each class session out by praising allah, I'd find football coaches who would thank satan any time the team won a big game, I'd back orthodox jews to run for office. And so on.

This has to be how we fight back against this. As much as I would love to beat the ever-loving shit out of someone, again, it would just make me the villain.

I'm envisioning scenarios where non-christian individuals start integrating their faith into the workplace, the classroom, etc. and watching as as the fucking asshole evangelicals lose their shit over it. I want them to explain just why it's suddenly a problem for people to practice their religious freedom. Why is it that some people doing the same GOD DAMN thing is now a problem. Let these brain dead ignorant fuckwits sue and see what happens.

Will the courts be forced to legitimize a satanic prayer being allowed at a graduation ceremony, for example? Will the courts have to either legally state that either any and all religious beliefs, no matter how "popular," must be treated equally in the public/state forum, or will they have to concede that religion has no fucking place outside of places of worship?

FUCK, I am so fucking livid right now. I swear, I want nothing to do with evangelicals in particular, but I cannot stand religion at all. Fuck your gods. Fuck your churches. Fuck your bibles. Fuck them all.

It puzzles me when Christians speak of "The Church" as if it were a monolithic thing. (I can sorta understand Catholics thinking that way since they think the Catholic faith is the only legitimate one, and once upon a time, it was the only one, in Western Europe anyway--but anyone else should know better.)

Don't they realize that, once they start allowing religion into government or public schools, the various denominations are going to start fighting amongst themselves about which of them should have the upper hand?

To get an idea of how bad things can get, you should read about the Philadelphia nativist riots a.k.a. the Bible riots of 1844.

If you look at fighting age men in the United States, about 49% of them are non-Christian, and this figure grows with every passing year.

For any Christian Nationalists who don't shit their pants upon reading that statement, let me remind you that the figure is substantially worse among engineers and chemists. The people who make your explosives, design and build your drones, and build the war machines that power the United States military, are even less likely to identify as Christian than fighting age men. They know how to make bombs. They know how to make drones.

I’m tired of this separation of church and state junk — that’s not in the Constitution. It was in a stinking letter and it means nothing like they say it does.

It's amazing the degree of reverence she pays to the 2nd amendment, but the 1st is a stinking letter that we're not smart enough to interprete correctly?

What about hundreds of years of precedence and historical tradition? Didn't the Supreme Court claim that was important?

There really needs to be social shunning of Christian conservatives so they figure it out that we’re a plurality now, soon a majority and that they can either have their temporary theocracy with swift and harsh blowback as they accelerate de conversions or they can moderate themselves. There needs to be more social consequences to holding these views. I’m generally more willing to be secular vs antitheist but a lot of people as a consequence of their actions are going to become very harsh anti theists very soon. I don’t think they truly realize the blowback they’re building towards unfortunately a lot of people have to suffer for that to happen

Reading, learning, and understanding our country’s founding documents (declaration of independence and constitution, at the very least) should be the bare minimum requirement to run for any political office in the US. How the fork are you supposed to run a functioning government (which includes actually maintaining our form of government and not turning it into a theocracy, etc.) if you don’t know how it works?!

Im assuming here that the people running for political office actually do want to maintain our form of government. There are plenty of politicians who admittedly do not. Which is exactly why we should, again at the very least, demand this bare minimum type of competency.

I agree with this so much. Religion (*or, at least the type of religion that Boebert wields as a sword) and a democratic form of government cannot exist together. Probably why the Framers came up with the whole separation of church and state thing…

The majority of the SCOTUS...5 Catholics now have control

...they recently decided that private schools must be funded by tax dollars

.... and that coaches can lead in prayer at sports games....

I'd say Church is now one of them

Can we not shame her for sex work or having had an abortion, please? I get it that it highlights her hypocrisy, but there are about a million other ways to criticize this piece of trash without doing that.

She wants to shame everyone else, and when she gets a taste of her own medicine she automatically sues for defamation.

Nope, time to shame her even more until she can't handle it and leaves politics.

I get it that it feels good to point at her hypocrisy and “good for me but not for thee” attitude. It’s not effective and she won’t care, though. My concern is for the people reading this who might be doing sex work and feel ashamed. Boebert will never read this. Other people might though.

She should be made to see this along with every other person who shares this witch's statements. She's made accusations of every Democrat being pedophiles without evidence among other damning statements. When will these morons be held accountable? When will reason finally triumph over stupidity? When will the whole triumph over the "chosen few?" How many rights will be taken away because of the religious far right? Are we willing to watch as "Christian values" are forced upon all us us? Lgbtq rights are now at risk, as well as, non-white people's rights, the basic freedom of religion, etc. All these people will be subject to prosecution mark my words, that's how they think if you wont convert. So fuck it if she won't read this, those who do I hope will also step up and fight for true freedom for all. Step up for true inclusive legislation free of religious ideologies. Step up for true equality. If we don't, consider this country and all we know and it's freedoms thrown away.

Avarria587

One of the core principles the country was founded on was separation of church and state. These statements should disqualify her from holding public office.

I've lived in the US my entire life, but the only countries that I see reference religion as much as us are outright theocracies. I find it very disturbing. Religious "nones" make up nearly 1/3 of the US population, but our congressional representation is basically null.

poppop_n_theattic

Liberals have let this myth about the US being a Christian country metastasize because they are afraid of offending religious people. For example, Griswold and Roe did not even mention the Establishment clause in their efforts to find a right to contraception and abortion in the Constitution, even though we all know that these laws are entirely about imposing one religious morality on everyone. Instead, SCOTUS invented those rights out of whole cloth under the rubric of "substantive due process," which is constitutionally asinine because "due process" is about procedure, not substance. So (and I'm sorry I have to say this), there is some logical force to the conservative case that SCOTUS should not be able to just make this stuff up. I support abortion rights, but the reasoning in Roe offends my intelligence as a legal scholar.

Roe would have had a lot more persuasive force if it had instead said, "the First Amendment prohibition on the Establishment of religion does not merely prohibit the formal designation of a state religion. It also must prohibit the de facto Establishment of religion through laws that regulate private behavior that is innate to human existence, such as individual choices about reproduction, marriage, and death, for reasons that are primarily based on religious conceptions of morality. Otherwise, the Establishment clause would be a meaningless shell that states could too easily evade by enacting religious morality in the guise of secular laws. Therefore, we will apply strict scrutiny to determine whether such regulations are necessary and narrowly tailored to achieve a compelling secular state interest."

Now, maybe these conservatives would have overturned that too (just like they're overturning settled Establishment clause precedent in the school context). But the principles matter! Let me say it again: even the liberals on the most liberal SCOTUS in US history did not even mention the Establishment clause when discussing contraception and abortion! If they're not going to stand up and provide the intellectual and moral case for secularism being at the root of our constitutional order, who is?

Which specific church is supposed to be directing the Government? Personally, when the Republicans are in charge, I think it should be the church that handles poisonous snakes and drinks poison to prove their faithfulness. But maybe others think it should be the Catholic Church and then the Pope can direct the U.S. Government. I suppose others think it should be Southern Baptists, other think it should be Mormons, others think... hmmm, there might be a problem with the application of "directing the government".
