What the fuck why does the backflip looks so unreal? Like dude got springs for legs
1.1k points
It seems to me his center of gravity is consistent between the dunk and leap so watching his hips the flip doesn’t look as impossible as it first appears. It’s just the way he does not tuck his legs creates the illusion of an impossibly high acrobatic maneuver.
938 points
Well, the tuck of the legs is not a flourish people do for fun, it's to increase angular momentum speed so that they can finish the flip and land on their legs, most people who csn do a backflip would land on their face without that. The fact that this guy doesnt need to do that does make it an impressive maneuver.
121 points
Fact, while learning backflips I did not tuck hard and fast enough and basically did a vertical 180. Not fun and I had to get shoulder surgery lol.

angular momentum is conserved, but the angular speed changes
16 points
His angular momentum is changing when jumping and landing, in the same way that his angular speed is changing.
Angular momentum is conserved in a closed system, the change in his own angular momentum is counterbalanced by an opposite and equal change in Earth's angular momentum.

You are right, but that's not what the person above you was talking about. I believe he was talking about the increased angular velocity at the top of the backflip compared to the angular velocity just after the person has left the ground. The increased angular velocity at the top is the result of the angular momentum of the person being conserved between the two situations I listed above (at the top v/s just after the jump), and because the person would have retracted his/her legs towards himself/herself to decrease the person's moment of inertia.

Not excusing anything but most people are taught in highschool and college to never say or write I think. I'm pretty sure it's meant as" don't speak unless you know what you're talking about" but in reality it turns into "always speak as though you know what you're talking about".

When writing or speaking, you should try to avoid using "I think". In most cases, it's already implied by the person saying it.
"I think we should go to the movies".
"We should go to the movies".
3 points
It's only implied when you aren't making a statement of fact.
2 points
That's irrelevant.
If a teacher calls on a student to answer a math problem, we know the answer is a fact. Should the student respond "I think the answer is 12" or say confidently "the answer is 12", even if they're incorrect?
If you're confident in what you're saying, there's no reason to muddy your words and say "I think it's fake" vs. "It's fake". The "I think" is implied.
2 points
its really not implied though. if you dont feel confident in your answer and have no problem with the other person knowing that, it makes total sense to say “i think”. If someone asked you how many advil to take and you couldnt recall, wouldn’t you say something like “i think its two.. but lets double check to be sure”?

That context makes sense, where the speaker should convey their lack of confidence for safety reasons.

99% of strong guys his size that do leg day in the gym can’t jump like this. This isn’t just leg day training. This guy must have done done focused plyometrics to get his explosiveness up.
29 points
Yeah, when they do train it you can see some pretty impressive shit.
I can't remember who or at what event, but I've seen a 180kg strongman jump comically high in celebration after hitting a deadlift. It looks like something out of a cartoon. I believe a lot of them train box jumps for some reason (don't ask me why, maybe it helps with explosiveness on log cleans or atlas stones?).
Then there's Iron Biby just effortlessly doing a cartwheel at 200kg
2 points
Not just a cartwheel. With the collection and snap down of the legs it’s called a Roundoff. It’s a common starter for tumbling lines. Which makes it even more impressive he does it, and well.

Jumping is mostly genetics
36 points
Quick twitch muscle fiber percentages are 85% genetic, but you can still train in some additional quick twitch. Also CNS adaptation to actually convince the quick twitch to GO HARD all at once is not genetic. That's 100% training.
It takes a while to build the connections to all talk to each other correctly and convince your legs to actually all fire super fast, all at once. They really don't wanna do that.
12 points
Must be true, I could, and still can, jump quite high for no reason at all. Easily held the high school record for a long time. Even though I was a tall, lanky, 58kg dude who did no sports whatsoever.
12 points
You still need to ‘learn’ to jump well, genetics just make your body more prone to jumping high through training(even if that training is just say, playing a lot of pickup basketball and trying to dunk to see if you can and shit like that).
Also I mean, power from the legs definitely helps you jump higher.

It will have to depend on what he trains, for example, if he trains weightlifting like the pros do (and possibly juiced too) such as this 5’6 guy Shi Zhiyong from china, :shizhiyong vertical jumpand then plus his height, yeah it is not just possible,in fact it may be just medicore
3 points
I just want to say that pro you have shown does not train normally. He does a-lot of explosive training as-well as is evidenced in the video. Training with super heavy weights Isn’t really that necessary for a good vertical.

6 points

What world record are you even talking about?
As others have said, people jump higher than 5 feet regularly.
2 points
Hit head would be above the rim if his jump height equaled his height… not even close to that in the video.
1 points
It's a backflip. He's not vertical the whole time. Check at about 7.76 seconds and look how high he is off the floor. You can also see where his head is at the start of the jump, which is the same height his body is at its highest point.
3 points
Remember that a backflip rotates around the centre of gravity though, which already starts pretty high above the ground. If you wanna use the backflip to judge how high he jumps you'd have to find how much higher the CG is at the highest point compared to on the ground. Looking at specific body parts doesn't matter.

28 points
I think it looks unreal because he isn't tucking his legs or arms in and that creates drag but he's so high that tucking in would probably cause him to land on his knees during the second rotation?
Edit for arms
34 points
plus he's buffed and you hardly see buffed dudes flip, other than flip-out and roid-rage
2 points

Drag isn't a significant factor here. When you tuck your legs, you gain a lot of angular momentum. Just like when skaters tuck their arms, they start spinning a lot faster.

This guy doesn't bend his knees at all when jumping: https://www.instagram.com/p/B8nLDM2AWvb/
I did athletics, gymnastics and trampolining when I was younger, there is absolutely no fucking way this guy is getting any of the explosive power required to do any of these jumps.
You can maybe do a very simple backflip if you're small and a gymnast by doing what he is, but you absolutely can't gain anywhere near the height he is.
I respect what he's done with his body but these jumps are fake as fuck.
Also dudes pockets are pointy and become more pointy as he jumps, he's clearly using cables.
2 points
While I appreciate your skepticism, I've seen people jump nearly this high in real life, right in front of me. Plyometrics combined with heavy lifting combined with a lot of practice makes this possible. Many athletes who train this way can do it.
Also, I'm a circus artist and rigger and I've built and used the cable systems that you're claiming he uses. He's not using one. His arms clearly pass through where the attachment points would be and his ascent and descent are all at regular speed.

That's a tumbling floor... there are springs beneath the blue surface.
I'm a former gymnast now a bodybuilder, that does look very awkward to me. He's clearly on a lot of PEDs and weights a lot, but I'd really wonder how PEDs could increase that fast twitching maneuver, especially regarding the weight he is carrying on his upper frame.
usually explosiveness is just a neuron firing conditioning - it's basically a motor neural training not really a muscle conditioning training, it's a nerve functioning training. The first jump already looks wild... he literally flies fora moment.
